Is it correct to say that a custom bike doesn't have to look attractive if its intended use is to set slow lap times and lean over corners?

Most of the time, custom motorcycle designers strive to achieve a good balance between form and function, but occasionally you'll notice them concentrating primarily on one or the other. For instance, when creating The Apex, a bare-bones track weapon based on a 2000 MY Yamaha FZS600 Fazer, the Frenchmen at Bad Winners tossed the "shape" side of things out the window.

This bad guy obviously doesn't give a damn about looking nice because its only concern is moving quickly down the racetrack.
BW vocalist Walid Ben Lamine claims that the bike weighs just 271 pounds (123 kg) dry, which is an incredible 146 pounds (66 kg) less than standard. As you can undoubtedly understand, it wasn't easy to achieve this enormous weight loss, but anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Walid and his team then went about installing the higher-spec running gear from a 2012 Yamaha YZF-R6 onto the Fazer after discarding almost everything but the engine and frame. The installation of the wheels, brakes, and forks was simple, but the rear suspension system proved to be more difficult.

Before the R6's swingarm could be properly fitted, much tinkering was needed, and the entire operation turned out to be one of the most challenging parts of this project. After removing it, the team at Bad Winners focused on the motorcycle's powertrain, installing higher-spec ignition hardware, a custom air filter housing, and stainless-steel exhaust piping for more power.

The engine's cooling system was given a more potent but smaller radiator to control engine temperature. The Apex is equipped with a lithium-ion battery, Motogadget's m-Unit control module, and a condensed wire harness. Digital aftermarket instruments and a Renthal handlebar with high-end grips from Domino are displayed in the cockpit.

The bike's flanks also have a set of 1,600-lumen fog lamps, LSL foot pegs, and R6-sourced wheels wrapped in Metzeler racing slicks. A new fuel tank, custom fenders, and a simple tail section—all of which were made in-house—were added to complete the change.
